Media Law and Media Capture in Slovakia and the Czech Republic after the year 2000
Hanák, Peter ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Kroupa, Jiří (referee) ; Višnovský, Ján (referee)
This dissertation connects theories and notions of media and democracy, oligarchization of media, media capture, and media systems with the economic theory of competition law. Slovak and Czech media laws are analyzed in a comparative legal analysis. Pluralism as the core value in all of the above-mentioned theories is researched. Novel historical periodization of the 1989 - 2020 era is proposed, as these 30 years are framed as a permanent transition of the media system of three distinct types. The Herfindahl-Hirschman index proves that the Slovak and Czech media markets are concentrated or oligopolistic, and this trend was strengthened in the last decade of the examined era. The new tool, the Power of Media Owners (POMO) indicator, is invented to show the strength of media oligarchs across platforms. This proves inefficacy of the cross-media ownership regulations, and it is used to measure the level of media capture. Fourth model of media systems, the non-pluralist authoritarian Eastern Oligarchic Captured model is described and the situation in Slovakia and Czech Republic is compared to it, concluding that both examined countries are in fact closer to more established Polarized Pluralist Mediterranean model, which is framed as a half-way to the Eastern model. Conclusions reveal which changes in...

Vojtěch, Adam ; Trampota, Tomáš (advisor) ; Nečas, Vlastimil (referee)
The thesis "Media Regulation and its Representation in Czech Newspapers from 1991 until 2011" concerns in its theoretical part with legal regulation of media in the Czech Republic, in particular with regulation of three basic media sectors - press, radio and television broadcasting and internet. It defines basic statutes in the scope of media law and analyzes the most important legal provisions, including the activity of regulatory bodies. Furthermore, the thesis compares the Czech regulation of media with regulation in selected foreign countries. Their selection and categorization is based on three media systems as defined in the book of Daniel C. Hallin and Paolo Mancini "Comparing Media Systems". In the second part, the thesis concerns with practical analysis of media content of two Czech dailies MF Dnes and Právo in the period from 1991 until 2011. The analysis deals with articles which are somehow connected to the issue of broadcasting and press media regulation. It tries to deduce how the dailies present media regulation and if emphasizing of particular topics could influence legislative acts regulating media. In particular the thesis concentrates on the press bill and the broadcasting bill which were extensively criticised in the analyzed dailies. One of the main results of the...
Comparative analysis of media tranformation in postcommunist states of Central Europe
Faltys, Marcel ; Klimeš, David (advisor) ; Jirků, Jan (referee)
The bachelor thesis describes media transformation in Central Europe since 2010, namely in Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. It deals with the decrease in democracy and media independence and its connection to public service media, media ownership and legislature changes. The primary research of the thesis is based on the theory of media system comparison of Daniel C. Hallin and Paolo Mancini. The theoretical part is divided into two parts. Firstly, the thesis defines the media systems according to Hallin and Mancini and the research methods. At the same time, the theory includes an analysis of critical political systems, given the fact they proved to be an essential factor in the media transformation. The empirical research focuses on the analysis of the countries mentioned above and their media systems. The thesis further explores political parallelism and instrumentalization and the role of the state and its impact on the public service media and ownership and legislative changes in the last 11 years. The thesis then analyses the changes in each state media system, the critical differences between them and the causes.
